NFMC’s Longtime Affiliation with the UN
NFMC was chartered by the United States Congress and established to provide opportunities for musical study, performance, and appreciation for music-related clubs. NFMC is recognized as the world’s largest music organization with a membership of individuals and clubs and the only music organization affiliated with the United Nations.
After the representatives from 51 nations ratified the UN Charter in October 1945, the UN General Assembly created the Department of Public Information/Non-Governmental Organizations (DPI/NGO). The mission of the DPI is “to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the UN.” In 1949, NFMC became the first NGO and the first music organization affiliated with the DPI.
NFMC is committed to executing the programs, strategies, and initiatives that support the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Agenda 2030, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Impact of Digital Technologies
With a background in music and arts from Susquehanna University, Ryan Workman is a marketing and accounts executive with Susquehanna Computer Innovations, Inc. in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. His hobbies include reading, opera, and music. Ryan Workman is interested in technology and strategic communications.
Strategic communications are the methods used by organizations to advance their mission and promote their image. The digital revolution has led to several developments in the marketing communication field, such as native advertising, retargeting ads, and increased use of mobile devices. Native advertising drives customers to a website through embedded sponsored links within a news feed. Retargeting ads are “sticky ads” designed to follow users around as they move around sites.
Organizations and businesses have used social media to generate ownership by expanding the conversation. The significance of social media as a tool and space has made strategic communications increasingly critical in conveying roles, tracking activity progress, and decision making.
The abundance of portable technological devices means that nearly every employee has a mobile device or computer at home. This facilitates faster communication, efficiency, and time savings for businesses.

Nessun Dorma - A Puccini Aria Interpreted
Ryan Workman is a Pennsylvania professional who provides sales and marketing leadership at Susquehanna Computer Innovations. Active with the National Federation of Music Clubs, Ryan Workman has also taught choral performance and serves as director of music for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. In his own progression as a singer, he has followed Luciano Pavarotti’s dictum "To be a singer is to be an eternal student."
One of Pavarotti’s noteworthy aria recordings is of Nessun Dorma from Turandot, a 1920s Puccini opera that combined a fairytale premise with horror. The song title is often translated as “none shall sleep” and reflects the wish of Princess Turandot that none of her subjects shall sleep, on pain of death, until they discover the identity of the man who dares love her. At that time, she plans to also have him put to death.
Rather than let this dissuade him, Calaf, the man at whom this directive is aimed, muses on it in an aria, coming to the conclusion that the princess’ fixation on him means that he has a chance of winning her hand. Indeed, the following morning, the man, whose real name is Love, does manage to marry his destructive paramour, and they live happy ever after.
With the protracted conflict of World War I not far behind, Puccini’s message seems to be one of hope, voiced by Calaf, that love will prevail despite that senseless tragedy of the world. Pavarotti conveyed these deeply felt qualities in an iconic 1972 recording that featured the tenor’s extended top B. It was used by the BBC nearly two decades later in promoting its 1990 World Cup coverage. That year, Pavarotti also resurrected the song as a solo encore, standing beside Carreras and Domingo at the Grammy-winning Three Tenors concert in Rome.
